Methodology
This page defines how schools are ranked and how universities are tiered — including the judgment calls behind it, made explicit rather than buried in a script.
1. Three categories, not one list
Not every school publishes the same kind of data, and this site no longer pretends otherwise. Schools fall into one of three categories, and only the first is ranked:
Publishes a real per-university student count — not just a name, an actual number who enrolled. These schools are ranked against each other.
Publishes real, confirmed university destinations — where graduates actually enrolled — but never states how many students went to each one. Shown separately, not ranked.
Publishes universities that made an offer, not where students actually enrolled. A student can hold several offers and attend only one. Shown separately, not ranked.
This is a change from an earlier version of this methodology, which ranked every school — including names-only schools — by counting each distinct university once, regardless of student count. That approach couldn't tell the difference between a university one student attended and one thirty attended. It also meant real per-university headcounts, when a school did publish them, were being thrown away. Both problems are fixed by only ranking schools where actual enrollment can be weighted properly, and being explicit about which schools that excludes and why.
2. How Category 1 is ranked
Every university a Category-1 school publishes is assigned an outcomes Tier (1–5). Unlike a simple list, each university's contribution to a school's score is weighted by how many students actually enrolled there — a university thirty students attended counts thirty times more than one a single student attended. The rank is the combined share of a school's total actual enrollment that lands in Tier 1 or Tier 2 — the eight Ivies, M.I.T., Caltech, Stanford, and Oxbridge (Tier 1), plus the next tier of elite institutions defined below (Tier 2). Tier 1 alone is a small, noisy number for most schools — a handful of students at Oxbridge or an Ivy — so combining it with Tier 2 gives a less volatile, more representative picture of a school's elite placement overall.
3. Reporting-period adjustment
A school reporting N years of enrollment gets N independent chances to land students at a rare Tier 1/2 destination — so raw Tier 1/2 counts are inflated by reporting-window length, not just selectivity. This matters more than ever now that counts are weighted: a school reporting 7 years of cumulative enrollment will naturally show a larger raw Tier-1 headcount than a school reporting 1 year, even at identical year-over-year selectivity.
- This is a deliberately aggressive choice. It can rank a one-year school with a smaller raw Tier 1 headcount above a multi-year school with a larger one.
- Reporting periods genuinely differ across Category 1 — from 1 year to 5 years for most schools, up to 7 years for one. Compare the "reporting years" figure on each school's page alongside its rank.
This is the only ranking this site computes — every school on the rankings page is scored the same way.
4. The 5-tier scale
Tiers reflect blended global outcomes/selectivity. Tier 1 is the most selective. Tiers 1 and 2 are defined by published external rankings, not personal opinion: U.S. News Best National Universities (US) and The Times / Sunday Times Good University Guide (UK).

- Bath and Loughborough sit in Tier 2 purely because the Sunday Times ranks them top-10 (teaching quality & student satisfaction), placing them far higher than global research rankings would.
- Conversely, King's College London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Bristol are Tier 3 — not in the Sunday Times top 10, despite strong global reputations. A direct, intended consequence of using that guide.
- Rankings change annually. Tier 2 membership is tied to a specific edition (U.S. News 2025 / Sunday Times 2025).
5. Data-handling rules
Category 1 only. Each university's contribution to a school's Tier shares is weighted by its real, school-published student count — not counted once regardless of headcount.
Weighted Tier 1/2 counts are divided by the number of years the published list covers (÷5 for a 5-year list, ÷1 for single-year) before shares are computed. See the years-penalty above.
Where a source distinguishes them, only matriculations/enrolments are used — never offers.
A school whose published list is offers with no way to isolate matriculations doesn't qualify for the ranking at all. Offers can inflate — a student may hold several and enroll at one. Not shown greyed out; listed separately, see Category 3 above.
A school publishing university names without a per-university headcount can't be weighted by actual enrollment, so it isn't scored against Category 1 — it's listed separately as Category 2, with its Tier shares still shown (each university counted once, the only thing possible without real counts).
Individual Oxford & Cambridge colleges are summed to the university level when a source lists them separately.
